UUID Generator

A UUID is a 128-bit identifier that anyone can mint anywhere without asking a central authority — and the chance of two independently minted ones colliding is so small that databases, APIs and distributed systems build on it. This tool generates version-4 (purely random) UUIDs using the cryptographically secure random source built into your browser.

About this tool

A UUID is a 128-bit identifier that anyone can mint anywhere without asking a central authority — and the chance of two independently minted ones colliding is so small that databases, APIs and distributed systems build on it. This tool generates version-4 (purely random) UUIDs using the cryptographically secure random source built into your browser.

Ask for one or for a thousand, optionally in UPPERCASE. The IDs are genuinely random — never derived from your clock, your machine or a counter — which makes them fit for primary keys, idempotency keys and test fixtures alike.

Like every TextKit tool, the UUID Generator runs entirely on your device. There is no account, no upload and no record of the content you process — close the tab and everything is gone.

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell a UUID is version 4?

Look at the third group: it starts with 4. The fourth group starts with 8, 9, a or b. Those fixed bits are the version and variant markers; every other digit is random.

Could two of these ever collide?

Theoretically possible, practically negligible: with 122 random bits you would need to generate billions of UUIDs before a collision became even remotely plausible.

Are these safe to use as database primary keys?

Yes — that is their most common job. They are unpredictable and coordination-free, so distributed systems can mint them independently without a central sequence.
