About this tool
Fitting an essay to a limit, trimming a product description, timing a talk: all of them start with an honest count. This one gives you the full set at a glance — words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, unique words and the longest word — plus estimated reading and speaking time, updated on every keystroke.
The counting happens in your browser's memory, nowhere else. Drafts, unpublished manuscripts and internal documents are never sent to a server for something as simple as arithmetic.
Like every TextKit tool, the Word Counter runs entirely on your device. There is no account, no upload and no record of the content you process — close the tab and everything is gone.
Frequently asked questions
How are reading and speaking times worked out?
Reading time divides the word count by 200 words per minute, speaking time by 150. Treat them as planning estimates — actual pace varies with the reader, the audience and the material.
What exactly counts as one word?
Any sequence of characters bounded by whitespace. "Well-known" is one word, "2026" is one word — matching how most editors and submission systems count.
Is my draft stored or sent anywhere?
No. The text lives in this page's memory only. Reload the tab and it is gone.
